The Danish capital highlights worldwide for the high level of integration the bicycle as means of transport in their culture. Policies decided in this regard were implemented since the end of the Decade of 1960, when the city was at the crossroads of choosing between an automobile-centric or people-centred model. It was decided by the second and began a process of incorporation of the bicycle in the urban layout, with either-way low speed or segregated infrastructure, among many other measures. Today Copenhagen has a modal share of 36% bicycle (Urban Audit 2009) and is expected to increase that share to 50% of total trips for the year 2015. Currently 50% of the city’s residents use bicycle to go to work and access studies (Copenhagen city of cyclists – Bicycle 2010 account).
To achieve the objectives of its plan was implemented, between other ambitious measures, a campaign to positively reinforce the choice of using the bike. I Bike CPH initiative complements very well the communication and the realization of the strategy implementing improvements to the cycling infrastructure of the city. It is in this context that implements an innovative furniture urban intersections, to deliver comfort (support and momentum) at the time of waiting for right of way at intersections regulated. In addition the message was incorporated “Hello pedals, supports your foot here… and thank you for riding in the city”, phrase that formed part of a system of positive messages aimed to reinforce the choice of the bike as means of transport.
We personally met this device the year 2010 in the city of Copenhagen and at the end of 2013 start negotiations next Bicipunto SPA (allies with whom we implemented the pilot public Providence bicycle racks), to implement in Santiago de Chile and generate experience and knowledge regarding their use in the local context.
The local context
To a stop, get off the bike results in an action which who cycled prefer to avoid. The ideal is to keep the bike moving as much as possible, but clearly cannot be so all the time. In the urban context we must stop completely to take the step to the other. If we can prevent rider dismount the bike in the arrests bring to enrich the user experience.
The Act of support for the bike will not lower is naturally given today in the local context. This can be seen on a daily basis in the cycle routes of the commune where it is easy to see users using road signs and elements of the infrastructure services such as support points for staying on the bike while waiting for the right step.
In the cycle routes of various communes is common to see users making use of signage and services as points of support infrastructure to not download bicycle in instances of waiting for right of passage. (Photographs: Claudio Olivares Medina)
Other action observed in field consists of the use of sill support for the foot when there is lack of vertical elements to support with your hands. In this way the bicycle user achieve their objective of not “get out of the bike” at the time of making an arrest. The next important aspect of this action is that sill allows a point of contact that helps drive the bike at the time to continue the March.
A natural action of all users of the bike around the world. This is in Barcelona where a user of the bike system promotes public local, Bicing, after waiting for step. (Photographs: Claudio Olivares Medina)
The application of this low-cost measure would order and formalize areas of accumulation and detention in the current network of cycle routes. There is still plenty of room for the informality and zones as described are not previously defined and formalized at the level of infrastructure or legislation. The installation of this device on the local network will allow to demonstrate its utility and effectiveness in the achievement of this objective.
Pilot project in Santiago de Chile
From Monday, June 2, the device is in operation in the newly released cycle route of calle roses in the commune of Santiago. (Photography: Claudio Olivares Medina)
With the support of the municipality of Santiago, the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of housing and urbanism installed June 1 first Rails support in Chile.
Yet several questions unanswered, but so far everything seems to indicate that the appliance is operating and is understood by users. There is still a short time to familiarize yourself with the use, after which we will be able to establish ultimately its efficiency and space requirements for their implementation.
Move bike today, it will be a good day.
